In epistemology the nagging voice of the sceptic has always been present. Over the last thirty years or so philosophers have thought of several promising ways to counter the radical sceptic: for instance, facts about the reliability of our cognitive processes, principles determining which possibilities must be ruled out in order to have knowledge, and principles regarding the context-sensitivity of knowledge attributions. In this entertaining and provocative book, Bryan Frances presents a new argument template for generating new kinds of radical scepticism, ones that hold even if all the clever anti-sceptical fixes defeat the traditional sceptic. Not only is the argument schema novel, but the sceptical consequences are entirely unexpected. Although the new sceptic concludes that we don't know that fire engines are red, that we sometimes have pains in our knees, or even that we believe that fire engines are red or that knees sometimes throb, he admits that we know millions of exotic truths such as the fact that black holes exist. You can know about the existence of black holes, but not about the colour of your shirt or even about what you believe regarding the colour of your shirt. The new sceptical arguments proceed in the usual way (here's a sceptical hypothesis; you can't neutralize it, you have to be able to neutralize it to know P; so you don't know P), but the sceptical hypotheses plugged into it are 'real live' scientific-philosophical hypotheses often thought to be actually true, such as error theories about belief, colour, pain location, and character traits. Frances investigates the questions, 'Under what conditions do we need to rule out these error theories in order to know things inconsistent with them?' and 'Can we rule them out?' Particular attention is paid to recent methods used to counter the traditional sceptic. Sharp, witty, and fun to read, Scepticism Comes Alive will be highly provocative for anyone interested in knowledge and its limits.

The thesis that the mind cannot directly apprehend features of the physical world - what Reid calls the Way of Ideas - is a staple of Early Modern philosophical tradition. This commitment to the direct awareness of, and only of, mental representations unifies the otherwise divergent philosophical systems of Rationalists and Empiricists. Thomas Reid battles against this thesis on many fronts, in particular over the nature of perception. Ryan Nichols lays the groundwork for Reid's theory of perception by developing Reid's unheralded argument against a representational theory of thought, which Nichols applies to his discussion of the intentionality of perceptual states and Reid's appeal to 'signs'. Reid's efforts to preserve common sense epistemic commitments also lead him to adopt unique theories about our concepts of primary and secondary qualities, and about original and acquired perceptions. About the latter pair, Nichols argues that most perceptual beliefs depend for their justification upon inferences. The Way of Ideas holds that sensations are objects of awareness and that our senses are not robustly unified. Nichols develops Reid's counter-proposals by examining his discussion of the evolutionary purpose of sensations, and the nature of our awareness of sensations, as well as his intriguing affirmative answer to Molyneux's questions. Nichols brings to the writing of this book a consummate knowledge of Reid's texts, published and unpublished, and a keen appreciation for Reid's responses to his predecessors. He frequently reconstructs arguments in premise/conclusion form, thereby clarifying disputes that have frustrated previous Reid scholarship. This clarification, his lively examples, and his plainspoken style make this book especially readable. Reid's theory of perception is by far the most important feature of Reid's philosophical system, and Nichols offers what will be, for a long time to come, the definitive analysis of this theory.

Embedded systems have become indispensable in our lives: household appliances, cars, airplanes, power plant control systems, medical equipment, telecommunication systems, space technology, they all contain digital computing systems with dedicated functionality. Most of them, if not all, are real-time systems, i.e. their responses to stimuli have timeliness constraints.
The timeliness requirement has to be met despite some unpredictable, stochastic behaviour of the system. In this book, we address one cause of such stochastic behaviour, namely the application and platform-dependent stochastic task execution times.
The problem of accurately determining the deadline miss ratio of an application and to optimise the performance of a system taking the aforementioned ratio into consideration is extremely important as it has a significant impact on the cost of the end product.
Real-Time Applications with Stochastic Task Execution Times presents three approaches to the analysis of the deadline miss ratio of applications with stochastic task execution times. Each of the three approaches fits best to a different context. The first approach is an exact one and is efficiently applicable to monoprocessor systems. The second approach is an approximate one, which allows for designer-controlled trade-off between analysis accuracy and analysis speed. It is efficiently applicable to multiprocessor systems. The third approach is less accurate but sufficiently fast in order to be placed inside optimisation loops. Based on the last approach, we propose a heuristic for task mapping and priority assignment for deadline miss ratio minimisation.

Operation Flashpoint casts you in the role of a US Army infantryman stationed on the fictional Malden island chain. Life on this remote posting is slow and you spend much of your time in training exercise. However, an armed force soon lands on the island and attempts to take control of some key towns. It doesn't take you too long to find out that the troops are Soviets and that you stand on the threshold of World War III.
This is the situation at the opening of the game's campaign. The training exercises before the invasion serve as a tutorial to familiarize the player with the game's controls. Once the shooting starts, you'll be faced with a variety of missions which can include capturing objectives, patrols, seek and destroy sorties, and a variety of other mission types. Not all of these will be fought on foot, though. Operation Flashpoint allows you to operate a large variety of vehicles from mundane jeeps to powerful M-1s. You'll even have the opportunity to pilot Cobra and Apache attack helicopters and A-10 Thunderbolt IIs.

In 1979 Art Pepper was recorded at two sessions that up until now have yielded two fine albums, So In Love and The New York Album. There was more first-rate material recorded in those two sessions than would fit on two LPs so difficult choices had to be made as to what material not to include on the albums released at the time. Those choices were not necessarily made on the basis of the quality of the performances but with respect to such considerations as length and congruence of repertoire within an album. These rare recordings which feature primarily material recorded in connection with the So In Love session but which also include a beautiful rendition of Jerome Kern's Yesterdays (with Hank Jones, Ron Carter and Al Foster) showcase Art in solo and trio treatments of jazz standards.
There are also quartet performances with George Cables Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins of material from Pepper's repertoire. The original recordings were painstakingly mixed by Rik Pekkonen and John Koenig. Analogue Productions is pleased to be able to release this material for the first time in album form, and much of it for the first time in any form.
THE INTIMATE ART PEPPER
Art Pepper had a gift for intimacy. Some performers make a show of being tender or sexy or sad, but Art put his inner life on display in each solo, and he always gave his whole self to every performance; it was an urgent matter to him that he "reach" his audience. So really, any album he ever made would be worthy of the title "The Intimate..." This one's just more than usually cozy in that it presents a wonderfully sweet little compilation of tunes, warm bop as opposed to cool or hard bop; he plays two songs on his gentle clarinet, and there are a couple of pretty solo ballads.
During his last years, Art was consciously making up for musical time lost due to illness, addiction, incarceration. From 1976 until his death in 1982 at the age of 56, he made more albums (and he'd already made quite a few) and wrote more songs than he had during what should have been his most productive period. He recorded and toured nearly nonstop. He told interviewers that for him lifereallydid begin atfifty.
The sessions that produced this recording were part of the energy and passion that brought Art to the whole world's attention at the end of his life. They were done "on the side." They were supervised by John Snyder for his "Artists House" label although Art was under contract to Fantasy/Galaxy at the time. Permission for one LP was sought and granted, and then John somewhat superfluously recorded on both coasts with two different bands. On "Yesterdays" (for Art an uncharacteristically uptempo "New York ballad"), we get to hear the New York band, to Art a challenging trio of famous strangers. On all the other tracks we hear L.A. musicians of equal renown, but they were people Art loved and loved to work with, and their presence, I think, accounts for how mellow this album is. When I listen to the music, I remember the guys playing ping-pong in the L.A. studio's patio during the breaks, joking and complaining. (I don't think the New York band took any breaks, and what conversation they had was excl usi vely musical.)
It was Art's idea to play the clarinet. It had been his very first horn, when he was nine. He took up alto sax at 13, and after that he rarely played the clarinet in public though he did play it at home. Art considered it the most difficult horn to play. Also, its little voice needs painstaking miking, and a too-energetic rhythm section will easily overpower it. During Art's last years he brought it out of hiding, cautiously at first,then more and more boldly until he was finally playing it in concert halls.
The solo pieces were John's idea. But Art had already recorded a number of tunes as duos with just a bass. And he had begun, in performance, sometimes beginning certain ballads with extremely long a capella intros. This was a logical extension of that and almost the opposite of what jazz, a notably cooperative art form, is supposed to be. It was an opportunity for Art, a magnificent listener, to listen only to ideas and patterns occurring uniquely to him. And when we listen to that mind and heart work through a ballad all alone, it is a truly intimate experience.

This 1988 concert turned out to be Chet Baker's swan song, because he died just two weeks after this performance, after a still-unexplained fall from a hotel balcony. Baker is alternately heard with either the NDR Big Band, the Radio Orchestra Hannover, or a small group, sticking mostly to standards and classic jazz compositions. Baker, who could be very inconsistent during the period after his teeth were knocked out in a brawl, is in top form throughout this evening. Baker's understated, haunting playing of "All Blues" has a special poignancy. He opens the evening with "My Funny Valentine" backed solely by guitar, with a delayed entrance by pianist Walter Norris (with whom he last played three decades earlier) and the 43-piece orchestra; his vocals quaver a bit but are quite sincere. Baker seems energized by the snappy chart of "Well, You Needn't," which features another old friend from his West Coast days, alto saxophonist Herb Geller.
The leader is joined by a four-piece rhythm section anchored by Norris for an easygoing jaunt through Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way." The big band is again on-hand for the richly textured arrangement of John Lewis' "Django," with Baker making every note count.

Different cover from Japanese pressing; features same extended cuts as the Japanese 2xLP. The cover art features pictures by the poet and artist William Blake depicting Satan from his illustrations to John Milton's Paradise Lost. Interestingly, the album also comes with three paintings of bizarre devilish imagery on sheets of what resembles perforated "blotter paper," usually associated with LSD. Also, the misspelling of 'abandoned' to 'abondoned' on the album sleeve and online MP3 tagging seems to be intended.
Review:
Pink highlights three aspects of Boris ? their trippy, ambient sound, their Japanese-version-of-Motorhead garage rock, and their psychedelic drone. The predominant style is the traditional, song-structured rock. The title track and ?Electric? reminded me of the last Greenmachine album ? full of piss and vinegar and buzzsaw guitars. Really strong numbers. The songs that really captured my attention and left me wanting more.

A fantastic lost set -- some of the most interesting early 60s work by both of the players! The group's co-led by Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean -- with rhythm backing by Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Art Taylor on drums -- a trans-continental trio of players who really make for a lot of fire in the date! The quintet play a fiercely modernist approach to hardbop -- somewhat like McLean's studio albums from the time, but even a bit more unbridled, thanks to the live setting of the album -- which was recorded at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco. Titles include "Us", "San Francisco Beat", "Lover Man", and "No Two People".
Review:
Recorded live at San Francisco?s Jazz Workshop, this CD has the exceptional rhythm section of Walter Bishop, Leroy Vinnegar and Art Taylor, while the horns still receive reliable swinging support. McLean was beginning to look forward and be influenced by the avant-garde; the passion he puts into his tone on such tunes as "It Could Happen to You" and "Lover Man" is memorable. Dorham was able to keep up with the times during this era and his compositions add a lot to the music. This generous CD is worth picking up as an example of veteran players stretching the boundaries of hard bop.

With his eighteenth album to date Kirk Whalum is taking a unique look at the past with an eye toward the future. This new album, Roundtrip, is a progressive retrospective that includes re-imaginings of some of his biggest radio hits (including the first single, a modern re-working of 1987's ?The Wave?), unreleased compositions from Kirk's early days in Houston, and new songs that hint at the future crossover of contemporary jazz into spoken word, hip-hop and rap music.
To help him bring this concept to life, Kirk called in three producers, all distinguished musicians with albums of their own, to share in this journey. Philippe Saisse, who produced Kirk's Cache and Colors CDs, and whose credits include Chaka Khan; Rex Rideout, who produced Kirk's #1 hit ?Give Me the Reason? and whose credits include Luther Vandross; and James McMillan, producer for American Idol's Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard.
The album also features guest vocalists Shanice and Kim Fields, guitarists Earl Klugh and Jeff Golub, and saxophonist Gerald Albright. Roundtrip is also a family affair. A renowned jazz bassist who was known for his solos, Paul Chambers spent a significant portion of his career playing with the Miles Davis Quintet. Paul Chambers' GO was originally released in 1959, and featured the master and alternate take for each cut on the album.

This interesting but out of print Vee Jay LP is headed by bassist Paul Chambers and features four all-stars as sidemen: altoist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Wynton Kelly, drummer Jimmy Cobb, and (on four of the six numbers) the young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard who was at the beginning of his career. Other than Hubbard, all of the musicians were currently members of the Miles Davis Sextet, but the fiery and sometimes funky music sounds much more extroverted than much of Davis' output at the time. Cannonball and Kelly are the solo stars on three standards and a trio of Chambers originals while Hubbard sounds promising. Hopefully Vee-Jay will reissue this set (along with its follow-up 1st Bassman) on CD eventually; the unavailable Japanese reissue has added quite a few alternate takes.

Joe Henderson's third Blue Note release (which is here reissued on CD along with the addition of a previously unissued version of the title cut) matches the very distinctive tenor with the veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham and an unbeatable rhythm section: pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones. Henderson, who has always had the ability to make a routine bop piece sound complex and the most complicated free improvisation seem logical, and Dorham provided all of the material and the music still sounds fresh over three decades later.

This progressive session from Joe Henderson is a quintessential mid-'60s Blue Note disc. Although a great deal of attention has been placed on the significance of the work of Miles Davis and John Coltrane at that time, Henderson was one of the leaders in the '60s scene that forged new ground into adventurous areas of jazz. The saxophonist plays sharply with a highly rhythmic style that swings and strides through the modally oriented material of stellar tracks like the blazing title cut, "Punjab," and the funky mambo "Short Story." With John Scofield, a big part of the fun is never knowing what the guitarist will do from one album to the next. He might provide an album that is abstract and cerebral, or he might come up with something funky and groove-oriented; That's What I Say: John Scofield Plays the Music of Ray Charles is a perfect example of the latter. Featuring well-known guest vocalists who include Dr. John, Mavis Staples (as in the Staple Sisters), Aaron Neville and John Mayer, this tribute to the late Ray Charles is definitely one of Scofield's more commercial projects - which isn't to say that he shouldn't be proud of the album. Commercialism isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as it is tastefully done, and That's What I Say is a tasteful effort that finds Scofield fluctuating between instrumental soul-jazz and vocal-oriented soul. Produced by drummer Steve Jordan, this 65-minute CD isn't for jazz snobs, but rather, those who hold jazz and R&B in equally high regard - and people who fit that description will appreciate Scofield's instrumental soul-jazz workouts on "Hit the Road, Jack," "Busted" and "Unchain My Heart," but will be equally receptive to the straight-up R&B singing of Neville on "You Don't Know Me" and Staples on Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You" (one of the many country songs that received an R&B makeover from Charles). The disc's only disappointing track is an instrumental version of Buck Owens' "Cryin' Time." Scofield uses the Bakersfield sound honky tonk classic as a brief interlude to "I Can't Stop Loving You," but "Cryin' Time" deserved more of his time than a minute and a half - and it's regrettable that Scofield doesn't stretch out on the Owens gem. But overall, That's What I Say is a creative success for Scofield and the R&B and jazz artists who join him. ~ Review by Alex Henderson ~

Stunning debut album from one of the "lost" bands of the 70's that should be in any serious classic rock fan's collection. You may not know the band by name, but many are sure to recognize one or two of the pedigrees involved. Lead vocalist Maggie Bell, whose bluesy and soulful whiskey-soaked voice recalls Janis Joplin and Bonnie Tyler, pursued a solo career after the group dissolved. Bass player and backing vocalist Jim Dewar went on to greater fame for his distinctive singing on Robin Trower's early albums. Unsung guitarist Les Harvey (brother of glam-rocker Alex) had his career tragically cut short in an infamous onstage electrocution during a Stone The Crows concert.(Listen to his acoustic playing on "Blind Man" to hear what I mean by "unsung guitarist"). Remastering on import edition is outstanding.

Warren Hill has long been pegged as a David Sanborn imitator in jazz circles. Actually Hill has gradually developed his own voice within smooth pop music although he has never shown the desire to move much beyond his melodic themes. On Popjazz he actually jams a little over the "Giant Steps" chord changes on the closing "Bridgin' the Gap" although even here he sticks close to the new melody. Other tunes find Hill sometimes almost stretching a little but mostly staying in his own comfort zone. His backup band is pretty anonymous and most of these selections, although pleasing as background music, are interchangeable. In Hill's version of "popjazz," the jazz element is very light. ~ Review by Scott Yanow ~

John Rambo has retreated to northern Thailand, living a solitary and peaceful life in the mountains and jungles. A group of human rights missionaries search him out and ask him to guide them into Burma to deliver medical supplies. Twenty years after the last film in the series, John Rambo (SYLVESTER STALLONE) has retreated to northern Thailand, where he's running a longboat on the Salween River. On the nearby Thai-Burma (Myanmar) border, the world's longest-running civil war, the Burmese-Karen conflict, rages into its 60th year. But Rambo, who lives a solitary, simple life in the mountains and jungles fishing and catching poisonous snakes to sell, has long given up fighting, even as medics, mercenaries, rebels and peace workers pass by on their way to the war-torn region. That all changes when a group of human rights missionaries search out the "American river guide" John Rambo. When Sarah (JULIE BENZ) and Michael Bennett (PAUL SCHULZE) approach him, they explain that since last year's trek to the refugee camps, the Burmese military has laid landmines along the road, making it too dangerous for overland travel. They ask Rambo to guide them up the Salween and drop them off, so they can deliver medical supplies and food to the Karen tribe. After initially refusing to cross into Burma, Rambo takes them, dropping off Sarah, Michael and the aid workers... Less than two weeks later, pastor Arthur Marsh (KEN HOWARD) finds Rambo and tells him the aid workers did not return and the embassies have not helped locate them. He tells Rambo he's mortgaged his home and raised money from his congregation to hire mercenaries to get the missionaries, who are being held captive by the Burmese army. Although the United States military trained him to be a lethal super soldier in Vietnam, decades later Rambo's reluctance for violence and conflict are palpable, his scars faded, yet visible. However, the lone warrior knows what he must do...

Dronevil was re-released through Inoxia Records as Dronevil - Final in 2006 on (double) CD format, remastered by Jason Lescalleet with two additional tracks not found on the original release.
The album was originally released on double vinyl in a pressing of 1000 copies; 200 on grey vinyl and 800 on black, but is intended to have both LPs played simultaneously, a similar concept to that employed by The Flaming Lips on their concept album Zaireeka. Disc A (Drone) is three tracks, totaling roughly 61 minutes in length. Disc B (Evil) is also three tracks, totaling roughly 61 minutes. Logically, the Drone LP's three tracks are quieter and fall in the more ambient/drone spectrum of Boris' work. The Evil LP's emphasis is on guitar-work, falling into the doom-metal range of Boris.
